Alex Coulthard
Alex graduated from University in 2011 and due
to the economic climate decided to use some of his spare time to
volunteer for The Trust while he was looking for a full-time
job. .jpg)
As an Office Volunteer, Alex supported the front-line work of
The Trust by providing administrative support and was encouraged to
pursue other areas of interest including editing web content,
writing copy and gathering case studies. Alex found this role
extremely enjoyable:
I really
appreciated the freedom I was given whilst volunteering at The
Trust to explore different areas of work.
Alex volunteered for three days a week which he says was perfect
as it gave him enough time to pursue paid employment as well as
contribute to Trust projects. Alex felt a great sense of support
and encouragement from The Prince’s Trust while volunteering,
stating that:
Being such a friendly and welcoming
environment; it was very easy to raise any questions that I
had
He also felt well prepared for the role after completing
relevant training, which consisted of a face-to-face discussion
with his line manager about his expectations and e-learning
exercises which he completed online.
Office volunteering roles are led by the demand of Prince’s
Trust programmes and therefore can vary in role description. All
office volunteers support a team with various administrative tasks,
which in turn enable The Trust to carry out its work with young
people.
This role also provides an opportunity for volunteers to develop
in areas such as communication, networking, influencing, teamwork
and understanding community issues. Alex sums-up how the role
benefited him:
“I have developed a good knowledge of the
charity sector, met some great people and improved my
administration and office-based skills which will be beneficial in
the future. I would strongly recommend volunteering to others who
are looking to build upon their skills because it keeps you
occupied and boosts your employability.”
